CAROLINE MONNET, SPOKESPERSON OF THE WORLD PRESS PHOTO MONTRÉAL 15^th EDITION, PRESENTS THE EXHIBITION IKWEWAK (WOMEN)

The World Press Photo Montreal Expo team announces that artist Caroline Monnet will be the spokesperson for its 15th edition, which will take place at the Bonsecours Market from August 31 to October 2.

The artist will present the world premiere of the exhibition Ikwewak (Women), alongside the winning photos of the most prestigious international professional photography competition.

“Women is a series of photographs featuring First Nations women who break free from the historical European gaze by reshaping their biased portrayals in the collective consciousness,” explains Caroline Monnet. “Women is part of a series of photo and video works that depict the indigenous woman in all her splendor, quirks, elegance, pride and charisma. In Women, I take a closer look at my generation and their desire to positively step into the future, while building on tradition and taking their rightful place in society. What emerges is a sense of excitement and enthusiasm about a future that we will build together over the next seven generations,” adds Monnet.

Born to an Anishinaabe mother and a French father, Caroline Monnet lives and works in Montreal. She is well known for her work with industrial materials, combining the vocabulary of popular and traditional visual cultures with contemporary codes to create unique hybrid forms. She is represented by Blouin Division Gallery. Her project Women is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.
